Fresh renderings: Mercedes-Benz Stadium's 'Backyard' on pace for fall debut Green space neighboring Atlanta's grandest coliseum will offer more than tailgating brouhaha, officials stressThe autumnal Falcons pre-party scene, plus a section for kids, as seen from the Northside Drive side. Expect turf installation by month's end, and a variety of permanent structures to take shape thereafter, officials said. It'll be part of "curated, year-round activations focusing on enriching residents and uplifting the community," per a press release. As for the Backyard's more raucous purpose, tailgating, expect gates to open four and 1⁄2 hours before games. Lingerers will be booted two hours after the Falcons and United triumph, or at midnight for later contests.

Totaling 11 acres, the project is scheduled to be finished in time for pigskin brouhaha in early September. Latonda Henderson, director of community activation with Mercedes-Benz Stadium, leads a presentation about the park component. Programming will include "things like theater in the park, arts in the park, really representing all cultures," said Henderson.

With sloping curls at each end, the bridge spans five-lane Northside Drive, connecting the new stadium with the Vine City MARTA Station, nearby parking, and westside neighborhoods. The colored LED lighting along the bridge can be customized to highlight events, festivals, and holidays. Georgia Bridge and ConcreteDesigns for the bridge's eastern ramp (below, at left) were changed from initial renderings to create better continuity with the Home Depot Backyard project. Officials estimate the bridge project will finish sometime in the fourth quarter of 2018.
